Teaching and Learning
âThe instructional climate is the framework that supports the teaching and learning in the building. Students will have a variety of learning experiences in and outside of the classroom [that] will develop their ability to become lifelong learners. This curriculum will reflect multiple instructional strategies, which will accommodate different needs and learning styles. Students will be grouped heterogeneously according to grade level. Iâd like to try to keep class size at a maximum of 20 students for grades K through 2 and 25 for grades 3 through 5.
âEach child will be encouraged to progress at his [or] her own developmental level and speed. Each childâs curiosity and creativity will be nurtured. In order to achieve an environment conducive to learning, the teacher must expect appropriate behavior fostering respect and consideration for oneself and others.
âThe assessment model will incorporate a spectrum of tools so as to support a holistic approach to evaluation. Teachers will be required to keep portfolios on each student. They will accumulate many observational notes, running records, student exhibits, and assessments in these portfolios. Every aspect of the instructional program will focus on the diverse needs of the students; on their academic, social, and personal growth; and on high standards for student achievement. The school community will be committed to maintaining the same high level of expectations for all students, while acknowledging the individual differences among students meeting the standards, and to encouraging and nurturing student enthusiasm for learning.
âOpportunities for enrichment, intervention, and extracurricular activities will be offered throughout and after the school day. After-school activities provide a perfect bridge between the students, parents, and staff to the school and its community. Another way to promote this bridge will be to hold events like talent shows, music concerts (chorus, band, and dance), and sports competitions, which will get parents into the school to watch their children perform and/or compete⦠.â
